Can, could, be able to

 

 Can / Could (ability and possibility)

Can is a modal verd. It only has a present, past and conditional form (but can also be used with a future meaning).
For other tenses and forms use be able to.

Can là một trợ động từ. Nó chỉ được sử dụng ở thì hiện tại và quá khứ nhưng cũng có thể sử dụng với nghĩa tương lai.
Các thì khác sử dụng be able to

EX:
I can speak Japanese very well.
(Tôi có thể nói tiếng Nhật rất giỏi)
 
She could play the piano when she was three.
(Cô ta có thể chơi piano khi cô ta 3 tuổi)
 
He can't come tonight. He is ill. (Anh ta không thể đến tối nay, Anh ta bị bệnh).

They couldn't wait because they were in a hurry.
(Họ không thể chờ bởi vì họ đói bụng)

Could you open that door, please?
(Bạn có thể mở cánh cửa đó được không, làm ơn?)

Be able to (ability and possibility)

You can use be able to in the present, past, future, present perfect and as a gerund or infinitive.
(Bạn có thể sử dụng be able to ở thì hiện tại, quá khứ, tương lai, hiện tại hoàn thành,...)
Be able to in present and past is more formal than can and could
(Be able to trong câu hiện tại và quá khứ thì trang trọng hơn can và could)

EX: 
I will be able to practise my English in New York
(Tôi sẽ có thể luyện tập tiếng Anh của tôi ở New York)

She has been able to speak Japanese since she was a child.
(Cô ta đã có thể nói tiếng anh Nhật từ khi cô ta là một đứa trẻ)

I would like to be able to ski 
(Tôi muốn tôi có thể trượt tuyết)

He wasn't able to come.
